Introduction

It has been given its name, Bongseosan, because it is considered a propitious site based on the geomancy theory and a legendary nestling site of the phoenix. Old Stone Age artifacts such as stone axes, stone blades, earthenware, scale-pattern ware and red earthenware were excavated from the eastern foothills of the mountain. The phoenix is called “bonghwangsae” or “jujak” in the Korean language. The mythical creature was often depicted in the murals in the ancient tombs. Legend has it that the phoenix descended to earth once in the Yosun times, called the “Era of Peace,” and it has never returned ever since. The phoenix is described as a holy bird with its entire body covered in red feathers that nestles only in royal foxglove trees and eats only bamboos.
